NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) is one the most comprehensive, integrated academic healthcare systems in the United States and is the primary teaching hospital for two medical schools: Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University and Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
Since 1957, The Starr Foundation has donated nearly $230 million to NYP, helping to fund capital improvements; recruit talented physicians and surgeons; and drive the hospital’s work in cardiology, therapeutics, and neurosurgery.
Gifts totaling more than $180 million have helped modernize NYP’s existing facilities, leading to increased outpatient care, expanded clinical and research spaces, and upgraded operating rooms—all with the goal of improving the patient experience. Funded projects include construction of the C.V. Starr Pavilion and the David H. Koch Center, which is a multispecialty outpatient facility equipped with advanced imaging to diagnose and treat digestive diseases, cancer, and more.
NYP is a top-ranked cardiac center and performed the first-ever pediatric heart transplant; its cardiology and cardiac surgery program treats more cardiovascular patients than any other program in the United States. In 2022, a $22.5 million Starr Foundation gift funded a major expansion and upgrade of NYP’s cardiac operating rooms, allowing it to serve more patients with heart failure, reduce waiting times for extremely sick patients, and upgrade operating rooms used for heart transplants. The Foundation also provided $10 million to endow a new Department of Neurosurgery, which has since become a world-renowned center of neurosurgical expertise.
NewYork-Presbyterian is also a partner in the Starr Cancer Consortium and the Tri-Institutional Stem Cell Initiative, which have collectively received $350 million in Foundation grants.
