Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

The Starr Foundation has long supported the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), a marine science research and education organization and internationally recognized center for ocean science, atmospheric research, and environmental monitoring and mapping.
In 1983, after many years of providing unrestricted operating support, the Foundation established the C.V. Starr Fellowship Fund. The Fund supports collaborative research by faculty and postgraduate scientists in Bermuda and abroad, addressing a range of globally relevant issues such as the response of marine organisms to climate change, and leverages new technologies to further the understanding of complex ocean processes. In 1998, the Foundation endowed the C.V. Starr Scholarship Fund for undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience in diverse areas of marine science and oceanographic research, such as coral reef ecology, research diving, and marine ecology.
As of 2024, over 700 students have benefited from nearly $2 million in scholarships and program support.
BIOS merged with Arizona State University (ASU) in 2021 and is now a unit of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory at ASU.
