In medicine and healthcare, the Foundation’s mission in New York City is to maintain New York as one of the leading centers of medical and scientific research in the world. The Foundation has funded The Starr Cancer Consortium, a collaborative effort of five major research institutions [insert hyperlink here] and a stem cell research collaboration of three institutions under the auspices of the Tri-Institutional Stem Cell Initiative [insert hyperlink here]. The Foundation’s support, in collaboration with the Greenberg Medical Research Institute, of Hepatitis C research led to the development of new drugs which have greatly improved treatment results.

Internationally, the Foundation has supported programs to prevent and treat malaria, blindness, and parasitic diseases endemic in the developing world. The Foundation has made grants to address the worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic and to improve the quality of water and sanitation in developing countries.
