The Starr Foundation Sponsors Exhibition of
Georges Seurat Drawings
at New York's Museum of Modern Art

New York, N.Y.The Museum of Modern Art has announced details for its upcoming exhibition Georges Seurat: The Drawings.  The exhibition opens October 28, 2007 and closes January 7, 2008.

This comprehensive exhibition—the first in almost 25 years to focus exclusively on Seurat’s drawings—will survey his entire oeuvre, with over 135 works, primarily the artist’s conté crayon drawings, including his first publicly exhibited work, Aman-Jean (1882-83). The drawings are complemented by a small selection of oil sketches and paintings. Seurat, best known as the leader of the Neo-Impressionist movement and inventor of pointillism, a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary colors are used to generate secondary colors, had a tragically short artistic career before his death at age 31 in 1891.

The exhibition is made possible by The Starr Foundation. The Museum acknowledges a generous grant from the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust. Major support is provided by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. Additional funding is provided by Susan G. Jacoby, The Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation, and Cultural Services, Embassy of France in the United States.
